There’s a beautiful scripture in the Bible that brings me renewed hope and vision for my life. Psalm 34:18 says “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.” Are you brokenhearted today? David learned this valuable truth which was the result of a bad decision while he was home alone while the rest of Israel’s army was out fighting a major battle of his day. In his isolation, he decided to take another man’s wife which led to her becoming pregnant with a child that wasn’t even his. Then, he had her husband killed thinking he could cover up his mistake. Shortly after this little boy was born, he became ill and died. While David was going through the anguish of begging God to save this baby’s life, he had difficulty functioning in life to the point where he couldn’t sleep or eat. He couldn’t focus on anything in this deep valley of sorrow. With great courage and his willingness to admit his brokenness, God met him there is his pit of despair giving him the strength to move past this painful event. Failure is never final. That’s what is so incredible about God. His mercy is always working for us, even when we feel like giving up on ourselves. He’s the God of a second chance, even when you feel you’ve blown it. What amazes me about David is the fact that he was a man after God’s own heart, not because he was perfect, but because he willingly humbled himself and admitted his wrongdoing. It’s not over until God says it’s over. As long as there’s breath in your lungs, that means you’re alive and can begin again. David struggled with deep heartache as a result of decisions he made, but what life change and a bright future God gave him because he desired something new. Desire more of him. He has so much to give.
